Europe’s power markets are undergoing dramatic changes with the growing role of renewables. This poses financial and operational challenges to fossil-dominated generators as margins reduce and plant is required to operate more flexibly. In response Uniper is transforming its business to take a more holistic view over managing its generation and trading functions to maximise benefits in the energy market. The introduction of big data technologies and cheaper computing power creates the opportunity to better use enterprise and market data to understand market position in comparison to competitors and to optimise plant performance and condition accordingly. To achieve the best outcome this requires behavioural changes for different departments to work more closely than before. Previously some parts of the organisation have operated with a high degree of independence and this has presented a barrier to making decisions that benefit the company as a whole. Uniper is addressing these problems with the creation of “1PnL”, implementation of advanced analytics techniques and an organisation and culture that encourages cross-functional collaboration, learning and novel thinking. We continue to understand new questions and challenges which we are using to shape our next steps on this journey.
