USACE POWERHOUSE FIRE PROTECTION CHALLENGES AND CHANGES(PPT)

1. Existing fire protection systems, where properly maintained, are acceptable for continued operation. 2. Many USACE powerhouse fire protection systems are currently being upgraded and/or replaced through construction contracts. 3. DoD powerhouse fire protection criteria was revised to clarify baseline requirements, broaden fire protection system types, and enhance power plant personnel safety. 4. Since USACE and A/E firms utilize the same fire protection design criteria the criteria clarifications will provide consistency in the equipment installed in USACE plants. 5. HDC will continue to suggest hydroelectric facility criteria changes to USACE Headquarters based upon research, construction lessons learned, and relevant industry changes. 6. HDC is in the process of modeling four different existing hydroelectric facilities for both overall modernization and the removal of generator fire protection systems. Each facility will have a new Fire Protection Design Analysis and Life Safety Plan for each facility which will be used to understand, detail, and evaluate future modifications.
