Corner Modelling Strategy for Finite Element Impact Simulation of Extruded Square Thin-Walled Column

This paper deals with the numerical modelling strategy for square thin-walled column subjected to axial impact loading. The behavior of the column was found to be affected by the way the column is manufactured, i.e. formed metal sheet or extruded. For formed metal sheet structure a comparison between numerical simulation and experimental result has been reported previously, which was found to be in a good agreement. In the numerical model, the element thickness at the corners was set to be the same as the other elements at column sides. However, when the same modelling strategy was implemented for the extruded column, the numerical mean crushing force was always lower compared to the experimental tests. Thus, in this paper the study focuses on investigating the influence of some key parameter on numerical modelling around the corner to the mean crushing force of the column. By a more careful consideration in the modelling of elements near the corner for extruded column, a better agreement between the numerical simulations and experimental tests can be obtained.
