Mastitis is defined as an inflammation of the mammary gland. Bovine mastitis is a disease of high economic importance. This disease is usually associated with an invasion of bacteria into the mammary gland of dairy cows. Economic losses (~$110/cow annually) at the farm-level are mainly associated with treatment costs, losses in milk yield and milk quality (Blum et al., 2015). To defend against this disease, immune cells, primarily neutrophils acting as phagocytic cells, will be recruited from the blood to the mammary gland (Burvenich et al., 1999). Therefore, normal function of bovine neutrophils is critical for dairy cows to mount a defense against bovine mastitis. Previous studies have shown that purely a-tocopherol (the most common isoform examined relating to vitamin E metabolism) not only improves neutrophil chemotaxis and phagocytosis but can also alter the immunometabolic-related expression of genes (Higuchi et al., 2013; Politis et al., 2001; Politis et al., 2004). However, no studies haveshown the effect of natural, plant-sourced tocopherol oil mix (Tmix), including a-, p y-, and 8-tocopherol, on the expression of genes involved in the immunometabolic response of bovine neutrophils. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of feeding a Tmix on the expression of immunometabolic-related genes for circulating neutrophils from lactating dairy cows.
