ACUPUNCTURE FOR THORACOLUMBAR INTERVERTEBRAL DISCDISEASE IN DOGS

Thoracolumbar disk disease is commonly seen in small animal practice and affects mostly chondrodystrophic dogs, with the highest incidence in dogs between 3 and 6 years of age1. In these breeds, > 85% of the dogs with IVDD have involvement of region from the Tl 1-12 disk to the L2-3 disk, and 50% have involvement of the region from the T12-13 disk to the T13-Ll disk2. The degree of neurological dysfunction depends on the severity of the lesion, which may vary from light ataxia and proprioceptive deficit to paralysis without deep pain perception.
