This paper evaluates the operational feasibility and the economic and environmental impacts of integrating a bulk offshore wind energy system in North America using High Voltage Direct Current Grid delivery system. The Gridview operational planning simulation software was used to simulate the hourly operations of the power system including the variability of wind generation. Results show that a properly positioned HVDC Grid with wind farms tied in along the HVDC grid could efficiently and economically deliver the offshore wind energy to shore. The offshore HVDC grid also acts as a dynamic transmission backbone for transferring cheap onshore energy to high price regions.
