Recent situation of UHV AC transmission systems and TC122 (Ultra high voltage AC transmission systems) Activity

UHV AC transmission is a key technology for the long-distance and higher capacity AC transmission from power station, including renewable sources, and interconnection of existing AC systems. UHV AC transmission technologies have been examined since 1980s. USSR started the first commercial 1200 kV system since1985. But this 1200 kV operation in USSR was stopped and reduced to 500 kV operation due to economic & technique reasons. After this project there had been no commercial UHV projects for more than 20 years. As early as in 2009, China's first UHV transmission line-1000 kV Jindongnan-Nanyang-Jinmen UHV AC Project was put into operation successfully. So far the other two UHV AC projects were put into operation and four are under construction. India also started to verify 1200 kV transmission technologies in Bina substation since 2012.
