The approach to predicting the future long-term settlement in soft grounds is discussed in this paper.It is well known that the consolidation behavior is dependent on the strain rate, including secondary consolidation.An inverse analysis method has been proposed in which the parameters used to simulate such consolidation behavior well can be identified.Firstly, consolidation tests were conducted with the separate type of interconnected consolidation apparatus, in which four consolidation cells were connected.The strains and pore water pressures of the four layers were measured.Secondly, an inverse analysis method was proposed to identify the primary and the secondary consolidation parameters.In particular, the stochastic nonlinear model (SNM)was employed to consider the nonlinearity and the spatial variability of the parameters.Consequently, SNM worked well in predicting the future deformation behavior of clay.The results of the analysis lead us to anticipate the possibility of the method's practical use.
