The soft sand stratum in the southwestern coastal areas of Taiwan has always been a concern for embankment and pavement loadings.A widely accepted method to cope with this problem is to use geosynthetics materials to reinforce the soft sand.However, the effect of geosynthetics on the deformation characteristics of the reinforced soil layer is rarely studied.In this study, the finite element analysis tool,PLAXIS, is used to perform numerical analysis to study the effect of some parameters, including soil properties,geosynthetics material properties, depth and spacing of geosynthetics installation, on the surcharge-deformation characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced soft sand.The numerical analysis results were regressed to establish a simplified equation which is adopted as the performance model.The Monte-Carlo simulation was conducted on the simplified equation to investigate how the bearing capacity under certain soil and geosynthetics parameters corresponding to specified deformation criteria in a probabilistic framework.
