In this paper we analyses the effectiveness of a modified single layer economic model predictive control for optimal and efficient control. The proposed modified single layer economic model predictive control integrates the dynamic economic optimisation with objective function of conventional tracking model predictive control. This modified economic model predictive control minimizes the average operating cost and also guarantees convergence to the optimal trajectory. The proposed scheme is tested on a shell and tube heat exchanger with a periodic economic cost function. The performance of economic model predictive control is compared with that of conventional tracking model predictive control. The economic model predictive control provides good quality control at lower operational cost.
