The effect of amines and ammonia vapours on luminescence of Eu(III) complexes immobilized in different matrices has been investigated using IR and photoluminescence spectroscopies and quantum chemistry calculations. It has been revealed that the interaction of Eu(III) tris-dibenzoylmethanate with analyte vapour results in the increase of Eu(III) luminescence intensity. The mechanism of luminescence intensification caused by amines and ammonia vapours has been suggested to originate from the blockage of luminescence quenching by water-related changes in coordination sphere of Eu(III).
