DISCUSSION OF CHALLENGING CASES OF FELINE HEMATOLOGY

A brief history and physical findings will be presented for five feline cases in which the acquisition and interpretation hematologic data was essential in reaching the disease diagnosis. Results from CBCs are provided for each case. The significanceof abnormalities identified in each CBC will be discussed in context with history and other hematology findings. The disease present will be characterized to the extent possible from the CBC alone, and the need for additional information and/or additional diagnostic tests (bone marrow evaluation, serologic assays, etc.) will be identified. Occasionally, a diagnosis can be made from careful examination of a stained blood film, such as when an infection agent is identified, but usually additional diagnostic tests are required to reach a diagnosis. After all available information is considered, a final diagnosis will be rendered for each case.
