Both cancer itself and its successful treatment can result in adverse consequences. To minimize impairment of quality of life (QOL) and maximize effectiveness, it is imperative to consider accepted standard medical protocols in conjunction with assessment of the individual patient's concurrent medical issues as well as the implications of multimodal therapy and polypharmacy. A textbook "recipe" for cancer therapy can turn into a recipe for disaster in an individual patient.
