Fluid therapy is a cornerstone of treatment for critically ill dogs and cats. Many critical illnesses cause a state of hypoperfusion, leading to organ dysfunction, which can then progress to organ failure and death. There are many different kinds of fluids to choose from, and the clinician should consider the contents of the specific fluid prior to administration. Additionally, the clinician needs to be aware of the potential effects of different fluids on varying disease states. Colloidal fluids canbe advantageous in patients that are hypovolemic or hypoalbuminemic. In the past few years, a concentrated canine albumin solution has been developed for the treatment of hypovolemic and hypoalbuminemic dogs.
