Real-time PCR reagents for the detection of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus and porcine deltacoronavirus

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) entered the US swine herd in the spring of 2013, with dramatic piglet losses in the affected herds.1 Nevertheless, the expectation was that this disease could and would be controlled using methods historically employed for the containment, control and elimination of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), a related coronavirus more familiar to US swine veterinarians and producers. Within the subsequent 12 months, not only did PEDV become a devastating swineindustry epidemic, but variants of the original PEDV were detected by molecular sequencing.2
