Traumatic failures and degradation are related and competing to cause system failure. To evaluate system reliability, based on the competing failure analysis, this paper presents a reliability assessment method. The hazard rate of traumatic failure is assumed to be a function on degradation performance, and the Gamma process is used to describe performance monotonic degradation process, the parameters are estimated by LSE. A reliability model based on competing failure analysis is thus established. A case study of the GaAs laser is given to validate the effectiveness of the model. The result indicates that Gamma process has better performance than Wiener process to describe strictly monotonic increasing degradation, and the estimates are more reasonable when competing failure is considered, comparing with considering the two kinds of failures independently.
