1. With stock engine hardware (CR 18.9), both RON60 and RON70 naphtha show reduced soot levels compared to ULSD. 2. RON70 naphtha soot emissions suffer from higher aromatic content in regions where ignition delay and reactivity are de-emphasized. 3. The more volatile and low aromatic RON60 naphtha allows the engine to be calibrated to operate at 2-2.5g NO_x across the SET points while maintaining "soot-free" conditions. 4. Low temperature combustion (PPCI) conditions are induced under low load and high EGR rates with both the RON60 and RON70 naphthas. 5. The results suggest that it may be possible to use RON60 naphtha as a nearly drop-in fuel replacement for ULSD and still meet EPA2010 emissions. 6. Future NO_x requirements may drive expanded low temperature combustion operation and under these conditions, the lower reactivity of RON70 may have advantages.
