Technology Roadmap (technology portfolio and R&D trends): (1) Different technologies provide advantages in different regimes by size (xWh) and duration (charge/discharge time); (2) LIB (LFP/LTO) most attractive in near term and to dominate over Pb soon (<100kWh), HE/HV-LIB from xEV potentially substitute ESS markets beyond 2020; (3) RFB and other technologies attractive for >1 MWh but to be re-assessed over next years also for <100kWh (local/decentral applications). Product Roadmap (applications/businesses by grid levels and market needs): (1) Electrochemical storage (Pb, LIB) to have market diffusion over next years for PV-battery systems (dynamical markets in Germany have been developed in past years) (2) Subsequent development and diffusion into further businesses from local to distribution and transmission grid expected to 2030 and beyond (3) Largest potential for battery ESS rather on local/distribution grid (drivers: fluctuating RES), on transmission grid level PHES, CAES, etc. are main technology solutions and rather competing with energy balancing Integrated Roadmap (substitution scenarios for novel technologies): (1) Novel technologies will have to compete with the exisiting state of art technologies in each regime and application: main triggers are costs, lifetime and cost over lifetime.
