Compact urban development in many cities can be featured by dominant mansards. In Saint-Petersburg, it is primarily related to urban areas built-up with buildings of the first mass housing types, which need to be improved in terms of energy performance. At the present day houses built in 1950s - beginning of 1960s can be described as depreciated ones and require considerable heat consumption for purpose of heating. With bearing structures and reinforced slab constructions slightly worn-out they can be reconstructed with increase in number of floors. An extra mansard floor makes it possible to increase living floor area of houses without significant increase in heat demand for heating purpose. On the basis of a reconstruction pilot-project for the five-storey panel building with a mansard a required thickness for envelopes has been determined. Provided up-to-date requirements for energy performance are met energy intensity per 1 m~2 of total area can be reduced.
