Arsenic, Selenium, and Cyanide compounds are found in de-Ink and recycle mill wastewaters and are difficult to analyze and treat. Many De-Ink and Recycle mills face ever-tightening NPDES and related water quality discharge limits. This paper presents important information and data relative to new analytical and treatment techniques necessary to derive precise quantification of Arsenic, Selenium, and Cyanide in mill wastewaters. Moreover, antimicrobial and disinfectant compounds containing bromides, chlorides, and sulfides have been shown to interfere with both the analysis and effective treatment of Arsenic, Selenium, and Cyanide. This paper focuses on the use of specialized analytical techniques as the means to analyze and quantify As Se, and HCN and the use of chemical precipitation and reverse osmosis to effectively remove these compounds from mill wastewaters.
