Sodra Cell Varo Mill Expansion, Making Of A State-Of-The-Art Pulp Mill

The pulp mill in Varo Sweden has started a mill expansion project that will see the mill increase its production capacity from 425,000 to 700,000 ADMT/year of Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft. This will develop and reinforce the mill's market position, both with existing customers and to expand into new markets. The expansion of the mill is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2016. This paper will discuss how the upgrade will be implemented in all the process areas with special emphasis on the mix of reuse of existing equipment complemented by new or upgraded process equipment and their role in achieving the higher efficiency at each step in the process. It will also briefly cover the time line and project organization for the mill expansion. Sodra Cell is owned by private forest land owners in Sweden. Valmet is one of the largest supplier of equipment for the Pulp & Paper Industry with the ability to provide all the process equipment for the complete pulp mill.
