The First 30 Years of RCC Dams

In RCC1991 (in Beijing),the first of the RCC Dam Conferences,a paper was presented in association with the greatly-missed late Dr Shen Chonggang called" The Development of RCC Dams throughout the World".In RCC1995 (in Santander),a General Report was given on the "Expansion of RCC dams throughout the World and the Construction Methodologies being used".In RCC1999 (in Chengdu) a General paper was given titled " Latest Developments in RCC Dams".In RCC2003 (in Madrid),a Lecture was given called "The State-of-the-Art of RCC dams in 2003-an update of ICOLD Bulletin No.125".In RCC2007 (in Guiyang) another Lecture was given titled "Overview of RCC at the end of 2006" and in RCC2012 (in Zaragoza) a further Lecture was given on "New developments in RCC dams".This Paper is an extension and update of the above series of papers and traces the development of RCC dams over the past 30 years.During this period approaching 700 RCC dams have been completed,or are under construction,in more than 60 countries.These dams have been constructed in all types of conditions for all sorts of purposes and have essentially superseded traditional concrete dams.The paper describes how the types of RCC being used in dams has changed and developed over the years and the various new techniques that have been introduced.
