This paper presents a new optimization technique for tuning proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller parameters of a static var compensator (SVC) that controls a synchronous generator in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system. SVC is designed and implemented to elevate the damping capability of the generator in the low frequency mode. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is chosen to optimize the value of proportional gain, K_P, integral gain, K_I and derivative gain, K_D of PID controller. Validation with respect to eigenvalues determination and damping ratio confirmed that the proposed technique is effective to improve the angle stability problem.
