Indoor Air Quality of Children’s Living Environments in Summer

Children are generally living both at home and daycare center. They spend most of their time in indoor environments. Children and elderly are known to be population sensitive to air pollution. Many investigations show the association between air pollutant exposure and allergic diseases in children (Lee et al., 2014). Air pollutant exposure can be quantified using pollutant concentration and exposure time. To assess children’s exposure, we measured air pollutant concentrations both at home and daycare center located in Seoul, Korea simultaneously. The distance between home and daycare center is about 400 m. Long-term measurement was done during the period of 9-17 June 2014. Measuring locations were set at living room for home and nursery for daycare center. Three real-time monitors and one passive sampler were used. Portable aerosol spectrometer (model 1.109, Grimm) was utilized to measure number size distribution of particles larger than 0.25 μm and it provided PM2.5 and PM10 mass concentrations. Nanoparticle aerosol monitor (NAM, model AeroTrak 9000, TSI) was used to monitor surface area concentration of particles deposited in the alveolar regions of the lung. A portable aethalometer was utilized to investigate mass concentration of black carbon. In addition, CO2 concentration was monitored using a CO2 meter. Daily average concentration of NO2 was measured using a passive sampler.
