EREPAS - a novel approach for PM-characterization of ambient aerosols

The proper assessment of factual air pollution is the key issue for the abatement strategies and policy makers. This contribution presents a novel approach to collect size-fractionated mass concentrations of ambient aerosols from micrometers to nanometers. This is achieved by combining two techniques: the cascade virtual impactor (Prassertachatto et al. 2006) together with the PM0.1 unit (Thongyen et al. 2014) into the Extended Range Environmental Particle Sampler (EREPAS) (Fig.1). This offers a possibility to collect the following size fractions PM10, PM2.5, PM1 and ultra-fine particles (UFP = PM0.1). Collecting the PM1 and smaller size fractions in combination with their chemical analysis delivers more comprehensive information regarding the air quality and could be a very good candidate for representative assessment of air pollution burden.
