Sulfur and Oxygen Isotope Analysis of PM2.5 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Southwestern Japan

The problem of transboundary PM2.5 has become the subject of particular interest in Japan. Moreno et al. (2013) showed that anthropogenic pollutant from the Asian mainland, dominated by fine-grained (PM2.5 fraction) sulfate, frequently affects the air quality of Kumamoto area in springtime. For better understanding of the formation and transportation processes, we measured δ34S and δ18O of PM2.5 in Kumamoto. Aerosol sampling was carried out in April-May 2013 at the Amakusa Environmental Research Unit (AERU) (Nagatani et al., 2012). During the sampling period, concentrations of atmospheric SO2 and sulfate particles were continuously monitored at the AERU. Particles were collected onto a quartz fiber filter for 3-7 days using a high volume air sampler attached with the impactor for PM2.5 collection.
