Mine stopes are often divided into primary and secondary stopes.The backfill placed in primary stopes must remain self-standing when recovering the ore from secondary stopes.It is critical to estimate the minimum required strength of this side-exposed backfill.The Mitchell solution is widely used for this purpose.This model and the related modified versions proposed over the years consider a uniform fill.In practice, the backfill in primary stopes usually contains a stronger base (or plug).Here, a solution is proposed for assessing the required strength of this side-exposed backfill with a plug.The sample calculations show that the unified solution may lead to more economic backfill design; additional calculations are underway to validate this solution.
