Characterization of Microelectrode Records in Deep Brain Stimulation Applied to Parkinson's Disease Patients

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson disease requires a stimulation electrode to be implanted in sub-thalamic nucleus. This work describes and analyses the information provided by 15 different parameters obtained from spike records acquired during the electrode implantation surgery along its trajectory from the surface up to the final position. Parameter selection is done using low computational complexity criteria in order to allow its real-time usage so as it can be implemented as a decision support system during the implantation surgery, helping for a proper final location of the electrode. Obtained results show that trigger-frequency related parameters, spike rate and presence and/or pauses between spike trains are those showing the highest differences among brain areas crossed by the electrode during the positioning. This study shows that a brain area detector and, especially a sub-thalamic nucleus detector is feasible.
