Customized production and provision of tailor-made services are common business models in globalized production. These can be found for example in materials research by means of high-throughput systems and the overhaul of spare parts. In both cases, there are warehouses and buffers with different requirements and limited capacity in the systems. The reactivity of these systems is therefore essential for a fast reaction to customer orders. An inventory reduction can improve this reactivity of the system but lowers the service level of short-term requests. This paper describes a method for reducing inventory levels through specific order classification. The presented method introduces how to differentiate service while considering customer-owned stocks. A validation of the model is achieved by comparing it to an analytic model and a simulation model. Results of the simulation study evaluates the applied order classification and customer stock.
