(8)KGHM Voluntary Environmental and Community Engagement Approach for Exploration near the Caspana Indigenous Community

Mining activities have become increasingly regulated and challenging, especially in relation to environmental and social aspects. Consequently, the permitting process takes longer, is more expensive, and is less certain. Risk of failure has increased. Project delays and failures caused by misunderstandings can be minimized by engagement during the early stages of project development. Small drilling programs not requiring environmental and social assessment permits require the same due diligence in order to minimize project risks. Between 2012 and 2014 KGHM successfully developed a drilling program located near the Caspana Indigenous Community by voluntarily engaging with the community, carrying out an environmental assessment, and actively managing operation and closure plans to minimize effects. None of these activities were required by the authorities. KGHM also informed in advance other relevant stakeholder, such as the Indigenous Development National Corporation, CONADI. KGHM's approach was progressively well received by the community; initially hesitant, the community eventually became trusting and finally welcomed the company's approach. The community expressed that they were pleased with the way the exploration and the engagement with the community was managed. KGHM's approach was based in its core values of Zero Harm to workers, the environment and the surrounding communities, Teamwork with stakeholders, a Results-driven focus on the long-term success, Accountability and, Courage.
