(7)Rebuilding Education in Haiti, a Chilean Experience of Public, Private, Academia and Civil Society Cooperation

The 2010 earthquake that struck Haiti caused immense destruction and death to the poorest country in the Americas. The Republic of Chile School, with which Chile has been involved since 1953, was one of nearly 5,000 schools destroyed, leaving approximately 600 girls in situations of extreme vulnerability. In 2012 an alliance was formed between the public, private and academic sectors to work along side a civil society NGO. The resulting cooperation of the Chilean Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AGCID), Komatsu Cummins Chile (KCC), Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC)and NGO America Solidaria (AS)formed the "Rebuilding Education in Haiti" program, which seeks the reconstruction and improvement of education in the The Republic of Chile School. This innovative multi-sector model has been recognized as the first of its kind in Chile. In other countries, international cooperation is a field of CSR and the global trend shows that the involvement of non-state actors will continue to increase. Do the mining companies of Chile know of international cooperation and its relation to CSR? Are these companies prepared to get involved? Along with sharing our experience, we (the members AS, KCC, and AGCID working together)want to further the application of multi-sector models in social projects and expand the scope of CSR in a globalized world.
