(p115) Operational Benefit and Cost Saving through PCI Application at the Blast Furnaces of T?inecké ?elezárny

In November 2013, the new coal Grinding and Drying with Pulverized Coal Injection plant was successfullycommissioned at T?inecké ?elezárny in the Czech Republic. As the main supplier, Paul Wurth provided theengineering and supply of key components including: coal grinding mill, hot gas generator, injection plants withdynamic distribution of the pulverized coal, and the complete control and automation systems. In closecollaboration, companies associated with the T?inecké ?elezárny - Moravia Steel Group provided a major part ofthe local project scope.Pulverized coal injection is utilized in T?inecké ?elezárny's blast furnaces 4 and 6, which today are responsible forMoravia Steels entire ironmaking production of more than 2 million tons per year. The installations are designed forspecific injection rates of 150 kg of pulverized coal per ton of hot metal.Continuous cooperation between T?inecké ?elezárny and Paul Wurth, in project management, and operation of theblast furnaces with PCI, was a key element in the success of the project. The project culminated in T?inecké?elezárny receiving the prestigious “Industrial Building of the Year Award” for the PCI installation, presented amongothers by the Moravian-Silesian Region.This paper describes the particularities of the project and the PCI installation. It highlights the metallurgical benefitsin terms of fuel saving, thermal regulation efficiency and improvements in process stability. Additionally the benefitsof the dynamic distribution system and the resulting optimal radial distribution are presented.
