Hazard Hunt: Rig Specific Identification and Elimination Strategy for Managing Losses

Drilling operations are one of the high risk activities conducted in Kuwait Oil Company. Completion of risk assessments is integral to establish a safe work environment; therefore, hazard identification studies are critical for identifiying all potential risks involved in drilling and workover activities. Facilitating risk assessments in any drilling program is crucial for maintaining safety and integrity of the drilling or workover rig activities. The process is designed to cover three areas of HSE management at the rig site: 1. First, removing the physical hazards from the work area would significantly reduce the potential of losses. 2. Second, the process focuses on PPE requirements and identifies the type and usage of the selected PPE for individuals in a specific work area. 3. Third, the process focuses on various programs and procedures that are specific to a designated work area. Inspection teams will identify specific programs to implement on allocated work area. Through implementation of the three aspects of this process, the rig site team will become: 1. Better managers of the hazards in their work area, 2. Aware of the specific PPE requirementsfor the work being done, and 3. More knowledgeable as to the HSE programs designed to make the work activities and space as safe to work as reasonable possible (ALARP). Develop a conceptual design, which identifies rig specific work areas, specific hazard identification training for employees assigned to these areas, identification of existing hazards in these areas, develop- ment and implementation of tracking system to close out all identified hazards, and a continuous improvement checklist to identify and eliminate future introduction of new hazards.
