25 years ago we advocated the FBC, mainly with potassium counter ion, as a viable platform for the reversible hydrogen storage under mild conditions (reaction 1) This concept still attracts a great deal of interest. Potassium formate (PF, which is the most water soluble salt known) in concentrated aqueous solution (16M, density 1.6 kg/dm3) is indeed a unique hydrogen carrier notwithstanding its relatively low gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen storage capacity (2.0% w/w, 3.13% w/v, much lower than the DOE 2015 target of 9% and 8.1% respectively.
