Fossil fuels impact the world economy and the environment dramatically. Due to the limited fossil fuel resources that can be easily extracted, the cost of energy has increased rapidly in recent years. Furthermore, the environmental impact of the fossil fuels has been felt worldwide with climate change occurring from carbon dioxide emissions. An alternative energy source that does not depend on fossil fuels includes producing hydrogen from solar water- splitting. This fuel source has the potential to produce large amounts of energy with lower production costs compared to conventional fuels. Nonetheless, the main type of semiconductors used in water- splitting has been oxides and sulfides with the former exhibiting durability.
