The proliferation of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is hindered by the lack of readily available, economically viable sources of clean hydrogen. Hydrogen derived from reformed traditional hydrocarbon fuels is likely to contain significant amounts of H2S and organosulfur compounds. The performance of the platinum (Pt) catalysts in PEMFCs degrades quickly and significantly when exposed to fuels containing as little as 50 ppm gas-phase H2S, so there is a need for sulfur tolerant PEMFC catalysts.
