This paper proposes a pH-Swing Conversion (PSwC) Process concept for converting lignocellulosic biomass and cellulose to fuels and chemicals. As is well known in the field, depolymerization of lignocellulosic biomass is a significant part of the challenge in converting biomass to chemicals and fuels. The PSwC concept is supported by our preliminary results. We have recently explored the sequencing of acid and base treatments of lignocellulosic biomass as well as cellulose. Specifically, we explored sequential combinations of organic acid (oxalic acid, OA) and base (tetramethylammonium hydroxide, TMAH) for the conversion processing of a whole wood sample and a cellulose sample at relatively mild conditions (at 150 °C).
