The tremendous fly and bottom ashes have been generated from power plant in Korea, and most of ashes have been dumped and landfilled. Recycling is a better option than landfilling because, generally, it has been found that fly ash contains cenospheres, mullite, silica, and magnetite. Unburned carbon should be removed to recover other materials such as cenosphere and mullite. There have been some studies to recover unburned carbon using flotation or electrostatic separation processes. Usually, the recovered unburned carbon has been used for power generation, but the calorie of unburned carbon is relatively low. Therefore, the unburned carbon is mixed with oil before being supplied to power plant. In the present study, the unburned carbon was extracted from water using kerosene. The unburned carbon was filtered and then could be supplied to power plant without mixing with oil.
