Cd based sacrificial coatings have wide industrial application for corrosion protection of steel components. However, due to the environmental and health issues associated with them, there is an effort to replace these coatings. Zn-Ni coatings have been studied as probable replacements for Cd coatings. The uptake of hydrogen by steel components can occur from several sources and may lead to hydrogen embrittlement. The aim of this work is to study the hydrogen uptake (analyzed using thermal desorption spectroscopy - TDS) following corrosion of three different Zn-Ni coatings and a LHE Cd coating. The hydrogen uptake of these coatings (following corrosion) is further correlated with their hydrogen permeability under stripping conditions.
