Slot die coating science has improved significantly from its humble beginnings. There are a considerable number of tools available to engineers and scientists that allow for the modeling and prediction of coating performance before a slot die is used, or even built for a particular coating or process. These tools enable the user to calculate the appropriate setup parameters for the slot die from the coating lip gap inside the slot die to the die to backing roll gap. The available tools vary in levels of user complexity from the coating line operator level all the way to PhD level computational fluid dynamics. These same tools also vary in price from a couple of hundred dollars to licenses costing tens of thousands of dollars per year.
