Stability evaluation on soil bank of reservoir with cracks

Cracks existed in bank slope of reservoir. Only few intrinsic and extrinsic influencing factors were considered. Synthetic influence of some factors was not analyzed; especially, safety character of bank slope was not clear under the work of cracks. Strength theory of unsaturated soil and analysis model of cracks was introduced. Influencing factors such as depth of cracks, status of cracks filled with water, change of water level, rainfall, and so on were studied. Analysis shows that safety coefficient of bank slope is influenced with change of water level; it easily leads to slide of bank while reservoir drainage or huge declining velocity of water level occur. For bank slope with cracks, it is deeper in depth of cracks, safety coefficient is less, status of slope safety becomes bad while cracks filled with water. Moreover, endangering degree of slope with cracks keeps close correlation with soil characteristic. The chance of accident is directly proportional to duration and intension of rainfall, depth of cracks, and declining velocity of water level of reservoir. The results can be applicable as a reference in flood prevention and management of operation.
