This work demonstrates the ability of an isolated strain P. glucanolyticus to grow on various wood components as sole carbon sources including black liquor from a kraft pulping operation. While a number of other organisms have been isolated that can degrade lignin, this organism seems to be unique in the sense that it can grow on isolated lignin as a sole carbon source, and do so both aerobically and anaerobically. Furthermore, results show that the metabolic and degradation products resulting from the growth of P. glucanolyticus are useful chemical building blocks such as succinic acid, gallic acid, malonic acid, and vanillic acid. This work shows that P. glucanolyticus is a promising microbe that may have a number of biotechnological applications.
