Today the electric machine engineering refers to a concept of air cooling of high-power turbogenerators based on the safe operation of generating machinery at power plants and minimising costs for installation and maintenance of auxiliary systems (oil seals, hydrogen service, and clean circulation system). Such cooling implies indirect heat transfer from the stator coil and direct one from the rotor coil. New turbogenerators produced by the Electrosila Plant of OJSC Power Machines are technically and economically efficient due to advanced engineering solutions, optimized high-performance cooling circuits, current electrical engineering materials and technologies. This presentation provides a brief review of current engineering solutions developed by the Electrosila Plant of OJSC Power Machines for the new generation of air-cooled turbogenerators. Design considerations introduced to the engineering practice of the fully air-cooled 80 – 225 MW generators and proved to be efficient in practice have been applied to develop an air-cooled 350 MW turbogenerator.
