Lithium-insertion compounds with the spinel structure become active element of a new generation of Li-ion batteries, namely the 4.7-V positive electrodes that improve the technologies of energy storage and electric transportation. The compound considered here is the bulk and surface modified LiMn_(1.5)Ni_(0.5)O_4 (LMN) spinel. We report the structural and electrochemical features of Cr-doped LMN phase and the LiFePO_4-coated LMN structure. Emphasis is placed on the control of physical properties that is needed to guarantee the reliability and the optimum electrochemical performance of these materials.
