MOVING THE FIELD OF UNMANNED VEHICLE RESEARCH FORWARD: SPECIFYING FEATURES FOR SIMULATIONS TO STUDY HUMAN-ROBOT INTERACTION
In this paper, we discuss the development of a set of features for simulations to study human-robot interaction (HRI) with unmanned vehicles (UVs). These features were developed in an attempt to address the limitations of many current commercial and open-source simulator options. That is, current simulators tend to be suboptimal for conducting HRI research with UVs because they are lacking a certain set of key features. The motivation behind many of these features comes from "lessons learned" while conducting HRI research with currently available robotic simulations. Where possible, we also cite relevant HRI research from the fields of both military and social robotics. We believe that by implementing these features in future simulations, the field of UV research will be able to better address the set of research questions brought forth by the changing role of UVs.
