Combining polymers and metals in hybrid structures allows engineers to create components with unique functionalities, exactly tailored for specific requirements. There is a great demand for joining technologies for polymers and metals due to design, economic and environmental concerns. PlasmaPlus? technology (plasma deposition of coatings at atmospheric pressure) has been successfully applied for deposition of adhesion promoting coatings for direct bonding of polymers to metals -overmolding of metal inserts in injection molding, direct vulcanization of EPDM, AEM and NBR rubber on metals, and welding of metals and carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) or glass-fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP). The present paper provides an overview of research results relating to the automotive industry.
