Double-shell waste storage tanks located at the Hanford site in Washington state store millions of gallons of mixed waste which contains hazardous and radioactive constituents. To monitor their condition and ensure continued viability, these tanks are inspected periodically through a comprehensive integrity program. One key element of the double-shell tank (DST) integrity program is remote visual inspections to monitor the condition of the interior and exterior of the primary tank and the annulus region. Improvements have been made to the DST visual inspection program after anomalies were seen during a routine visual inspection of the annulus of Tank 241-AY-102 (AY-102) in August 2012. Shortly after these routine inspections, tank AY-102 was determined to be leaking from the primary tank bottom.
