A reliable, convenient method for checking the presence, thickness, and uniformity of coatings on various surfaces, including metals and glass, is a long-standing concern in several industries. Performing the measurement non-destructively, and preferably without any surface contact, is also extremely important when coating integrity is a concern. We now report a new approach that uses an out-of-compartment grazing-angle FTIR method to enable non-contact mapping of the thickness and distribution of coatings such as lubricants across the surface of items such as hard disks. Other applications are also discussed.
