The apparatus has one or more heads (10) which move along a rim portion of the glass plate (1). One or more motorised tools (32a) are provided on the head. The tool is a cup shaped type, and has a flat surface. The flat surface constitutes an active face for treating the coatings. The tool contacts the coatings along an annular portion of the surface. A train of rollers (8) and a rack (9) downwardly and rearwardly support the glass plate and convey it to a reference position adjacent to the head. A motorised belt is associated with the head to move it in a vertical direction.
