Fabrication of thermally stable, low cost hydrogen separation membrane for pre-combustion process was studied. A novel composite membrane with Pd layer encapsulated in a porous α-alumina substrate (Pd/Al2O3(PF)) was successfully prepared. Pd was observed only in the porous substrate matrix at a depth of 10 μm from the top surface. This membrane showed extremely high H2 permselectivity (αH2/N2 > 10,000) at 773 K and good stability.
